Thank God. I just received a call from my mom. They finally arrived in Lufkin this morning after leaving Texas City at 8:30 p.m. last night. My parents are exhausted and the pets are a little freaked out, but at least they are all well away from the coast. My other brother and my friend decided to hunker down in Houston rather than risk getting stuck on the side of the highway when the hurricane hits. The mayor of Houston stupidly called for the evacuation too early and didn't allow for the coastal communities to get out first. Houston probably didn't even need to be evacuated. Now hundreds of people are stranded on the sides of the highways with no gas. Luckily, the hurricane shifted so it won't be as bad for that area, but they're still in for one helluva storm. It is not something you want to be stuck in your car through.
My mom was telling me about our neighborhood on the phone yesterday. It was deserted and yet there was a cat and a white German shepherd wandering around. My mom tried to feed the dog but he just ran away. I can't understand people that just abandon their pets to their own fate.
I'd like to thank the people from all over the world that checked this blog and have hoped for my family's safety. This storm is far from over but at least everyone I know in that area has reached shelter. Keep praying for those countless others that are still on the road.
I'm going to get some sleep now. I slept uneasily last night and kept having dreams that I was riding in the back of my parents' truck, with the dogs jumping all over me. This sounds corny, but I like to think that some part of me was with my parents through the dark.
Saw your message as I checked for info relating to Rita. Hope all goes well for you and yours. My sister lives a few miles north of Lufkin and is quite anxious. I'm standing by the phone up here in Canada hoping to be able to make contact over the next few days to check on her safety and that of her pets (including a white german shepherd - I know he's safe with his cat and dog friends at the moment)
Good Luck!

Hey, baby, I'm sorry I worried you so much. We are all safe and sound now but my heart is sick for all those still stranded on the side of the road. Pray for them, Hurricane Rita is hitting the coast now. And there are still several thousand people stranded on the highway. God help us all.

I hope all your friends and family are safe. It is a terrible time for you all. I found your link while reading news on Hurricaine Rita on the BBC website.
