My brother has moved into his new apartment. He doesn't really have much in there now, but in about a week, he will have his new Lancaster leather sofa and Chesterfield upholstered sleigh bed from Restoration Hardware! I cannot believe he picked the most expensive items that I suggested, especially since I just threw them in for the hell of it. He won't regret it though. Those pieces will be heirlooms. They are neutral pieces, but I could kind of tailor the textiles towards them. For example, that bed will be the showpiece, so all of the other furniture in the bedroom will be simple. I was also originally going to suggest a beige linen duvet, but that would be entirely too much beige on the bed, so now I'm thinking dark or patterned bedding.
I really think a Moroccan Berber-inspired rug would look great in the living room. It adds a nice world traveler vibe, but the pattern is subtle, so you can still have other patterns around the room without it looking too busy. I added a few different price points for variety. I think Jimmy needs to get me that one from Target. ;)
Souk Wool Rug by West Elm $189 (3'x5'), $500 (5'x8')
Threshold Crisscross Shag Rug by Target $250 (5'x7')
Ivory Moroccan Shag Rug by World Market $300 (5'x8')
If you want something a little moodier, I really love this kilim rug in shades of violet and indigo. This can add some nice drama to the room. I would use a pale throw pillow to balance out the darkness though.
Empire Wool Kilim by West Elm $150 (3'x5'), $400 (5'x8')
For the bedroom, I think a simple jute rug will work fine. You really just want something soft and warm to put your feet on first thing in the morning, so there is no need to get fancy.

Pillows + Throws:
These pillows remind me of Japanese indigo without the price point. These would look good with one of the cream rugs.
Batik Ombre Pillow Covers by West Elm $34-39 each
I like the botanical sketch-look of these pillows by Crate & Barrel. These would look good with the darker kilim rug.
Floral Etching Pillow in Dove by Crate & Barrel $40
The lamb pillows are super soft and would add some nice texture to the living room. I had a faux-lamb pillow from Target that wasn't nearly as soft, but it was $13 so I got it. Then the cat peed on it. SHE IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS! Anyway, these are much nicer than my pee-covered faux lambskin pillow. I bet John's girlfriend would like one.
Mongolian Lamb Pillow cover by West Elm $59-69
Also for his girlfriend's benefit, a nice throw to cuddle up with on movie nights. The indigo linen throw or, for a more ethnic look, a kantha throw would look great on John's leather couch. I would pick out the kantha throw in store since they choose for you online and you want to make sure it matches your room.
Washed Linen Indigo Throw by Restoration Hardware $100
Found Authentic Kantha Throw by Pottery Barn $79
I think my brother already has bedding, but I thought I would go ahead and suggest a set. I would pair the patterned Shibori shams with the deep indigo Nomad comforter for a look that matches but is not matchy.
Shibori Duvet Cover + Shams by West Elm
Nomad Coverlet and Shams in Deep Sea by West Elm
This shower curtain has a Japanese pattern in shades of grade. This would tie it together with the rest of the apartment, but bring in gray as the dominant color. A pale to medium gray bath rug and towels would match nicely.
Shibori Shower Curtain by West Elm $40
